Cross Country Pre-Season Outlook
While each year is different, this upcoming season is filled with youth. Both girls and boys team improved their standing in the state for a second straight year. The girls finished 15th while the boys finished 3rd. Most of the student athletes contributing to last year’s success return and are still underclassmen. The coaching staff is excited to continue work with this fine group and their families.
Over the last two years the boys have beaten every AAA team in the state except one. They graduated two important seniors. An all state runner, Will Caswell, and fellow captain, Austin Poison, who will be running for College of Charleston this fall. We are young but filled with incredible potential. Returning this season is a group who could do something very special over the next two years. Junior Justin Knipper’s first year included a top 20 finish at states., This year’s sophomores, led by Will Vaught, finished near the top of the 2012 Coaches Classic Freshman division. They should provide the backbone to this year’s squad. Chris Matleshewski, South Carolina’s fastest 7th grader, and Tanner Goshert, two time Horry County JV champion, should add depth to our core group. With a persistent work ethic and focus over the next two years this group should evolve into something special.
A young girl’s team offers more racing experience than you would expect. The bulk of these girls are also underclassman with at least three years of racing experience. The team has tons of depth with the potential for some real stars; Bekka Booth, Jill Dudley, Kyleigh Adorno, and Crystal Shimer are coming off a great track season in the spring.
The turnout at summer practices has been exceptional this year. We have added many new Braves to our community of runners. Their commitment to self improvement, lifelong running, and their team creates the foundation which makes Socastee High School Cross Country such a unique and special family. Thank you to all those who support us.
